I had felt my eyes clouding through the sets of Jay Som and Japanese Breakfast, and watching Mitski step out was enough to poke at a bruise I didn’t even know I had formed – something fell into place that night for me that I wasn’t expecting, but that I knew I would be chasing every night afterwards. 

Carol utilizes the organic and inorganic to drench the listener in emotion and sound, springing up from below and consuming, centering around womanhood and embrasure of femininity in a higher form. The end-product is a musical space anchored by Carol’s poems spun into lyrics and softly articulated guitar, accented by urging percussion and keyboard, flowing vocal harmonies, and distorted, crackling synths.

Their new EP, The Water Cycle Falls in Love, is a fun little ode to romance with the purest of intentions. The entire album feels like a collar tug and clearing of the throat on the way to prom. It’s sweaty palms and tripping over your feet, a flush building under your skin, innocent even when the subject matter turns a tad cheeky.

In that moment, you feel like an extension of the ocean as it is both utterly at peace and at war with itself. form/a is the calm and the storm. There are no answers here, just moments of reprieve and clarity in the chaos.

As much as they perform and entertain, they let us peak behind the curtain to reveal the truth we all suspect. There is no smoking gun, no guilt or anger over privilege, only the sense of responsibility and desire to utilize privilege productively for themselves and others.

Quinlan’s words joke with a sting of the reality – the relinquishing of ego is uncomfortable and seems to be the missing piece that has fallen into place, forcing her to “rework what [she] had initially written to suit the improved part.” As much as the songs ring true to previous recordings, there are special touches to this record. Lines come in and out on instruments never previously utilized by the band, while vocal lines are added to fill out arrangements that produce a fullness that is felt when it is taken away.
